christmas spirit

With the passing of each Christmas the holiday spirit and the excitement seem to diminish, the break is no longer filled with joyous winter outings and the excitement is only for the break off of school. As a teen my break is filled with work, school and stress about university. Which is a drastic change from when I was little and the only thing I had to worry about was my snow pants soaking through while tobogganing for hours. As you grow up the magic of Christmas seems to slowly deplete from the cold winter nights and sometimes the fact that Christmas is near is completely forgotten. Even though Christmas time is continuously changing the one thing that should never be forgotten is family and how much they mean to you. 

journalistic ethics

When a journalist lies a punishment is in order, but what the punishment is is yet to be decided. Although publishing false information may not seem that important it is. When a journalist releases an article the public trusts that the article is factual, if the article is not true than the journalist is releasing false potentially important information. The repercussions for releasing untrue information should result in a fine and community service depending on the severity of the crime. Jail time would not accomplish anything due to the fact that the sentence would be minimal. If the ordeal becomes a well known issue and a movie or television show then the journalist who committed the crime should not profit from it due to their fraudulence. If they recieve any profit then the act of publishing false information becomes ok, and they are rewarded for the crime.

Hey World, Here I Am! by Jean Little
Wars - pg 13

Jean Little who is legally blind from birth moved from Tiwan to Guelph in 1940. She didn't allow her blindness to get in the way of her education and attended the University of Toronto. She also lived across the street for a small period of time.

This poem is about how its easy to judge a situation but when you are in a similar situation it's hard to use the same judgment you once had. This shows that Jean understood the evil of wars between nations. Jean has a sister, children and grandchildren and I'm sure that situations like the poem have happened in reality, but I think this particular poem could be about blindness. The war of going blind with age something she would like to stop but in the end it's inevitable.

"When I was in Grade Two, I said to my father,
'I think wars are wrong!
People should be told to stop all this fighting right now.
If I were crowned Queen of  the World,
I'd make wars against the law.'
My father said I had something there,
But he didn't seem terribly excited.
I could not understand him.

Then I went upstairs and caught my sister Marilyn
Playing with my new paper dolls without my permission!

the right to vote

Although the party that i voted for was elected, i believe that as a seventeen year old we should have the right to vote. Most people seventeen and older have the maturity to vote. Personally I believe that if younger generations had the right to vote then we would see a massive change in amount of people showing up to the polls to vote. People argue that as we are only seventeen years old that we don't have the maturity to vote, even though we can drive and plan out our lives. They believe that voting will no longer be taken seriously, but the teenagers they are concerned about most likely wont even show up to vote.

your adaptable mind

Out of the five personality traits that are needed for future challenges, I have four of them. I have a lot of initiative if I am working towards something that I desire. If I don't desire the end result then my initiative disappears. Additional traits I have are curiosity and empathy. I grouped these traits together because they have the most to do with human emotion. Curiosity is a big part of who I am. I've always been someone who wants to figure things out. This leads to empathy, not only do I want to figure out how things work but also people's emotions. After analyzing the situation and knowing how people feel and trying to help them by giving them advice and stating my opinion, is a big part of who I am. Lastly, multi disciplinary thinking is a trait I posses, I enjoy every subject except for math, history and law being my favourites.

education is key?

I believe education is important but I also know it's not for everyone. When people are in school studing subjects that they don´t care about they memorize the information until it is no longer needed. That´s not eduction. Being able to remember what you've learned and then to apply it to your life shows how educated you are. Not everyone wants an "education" but there are different ways to be educated. You can be educated in mechanics and automotive technology or in the arts. If thats you then maybe post secondary eduction at a University isn't for you but a Collage or internship may be. That doesn´t mean you are any less educated than another.

I've decided to take this course to further my love of reading as well as to introduce me to new writing techniques and concepts that will help further my writing. I hope this class will allow me to better understand literature and improve my own writing skills for future English courses. Writing skills are very important as writing is a powerful thing. Written words have the power to evoke many kinds of emotions from a reader if written correctly. That skill is something that i wish to have, and i hope this course can help me find the ability to do so.
